eComPack - Compact eCommerce Fulfilment Automation

eComPack was developed to automate Mondi`s EnelopeMailer. A rigid corrugated Envelope that can be used as a flat envelope or transforms to a boxy shipping mailer. It can be used for a large variety of items that require good protection. The envelope has seen huge demand in the market. Yet players emphasize on shifting to automation in the packaging process of the fulfilment/logistics centers (FCs). eComPack, is a compact machine that fully automates the scanning, opening, filling and closing of the shipment with EnvelopeMailers on a very small footprint with an output of 500 packs per hour. It therewith is a very interesting alternative for medium and large FCs who look for easy integration of a high performance, easy to operate and maintain.

Minimal personnel attendance is required- 1 operator can operate 3 machines. Thanks to the small footprint , FCs can place several machines next to each other, from an operational total cost 3 machines are most effective and get then 1500 packs per hr ready for shipping.

eCommerce fulfilment faces generally the challenge of increasing lack of manual labor and high fluctuation. Given this fact as well as overall pressure for higher cost efficiency, automation is gaining importance for fulfilment service providers and market places with own FCs. Additionally the choice for such machines is more limited than before as the packaging utilized in the process needs to be sustainable and shifts to paper based packaging automation is prevailing. The mix of choices includes machines with investment amounts well over over 1 mln EUR and a floor footprint that often requires a complete restructuring of the FC´s footprint, while some may not include the filling step in the automated process. The used packaging types offer different protective levels. The eComPack machine has a unique market position when benchmarked in the decisive mix of criteria vs other automation solutions in the eCommerce: Space needed – easy integration / cost of investment/ automated filling as a process steps / Output speed/ Size flexible and paper based packaging . The machine concept was developed based on the voiced wish list of needs and KPIs of eCommerce customers of Mondi. The ingenuity and experience of Heiber&Schröder, who were willing to accept the challenge, brought a machine to market that • manages the full automation process, including the filling ( scanning, selecting the right size • on a footprint of only 14sqm • while offering a favorable output speed of 500 packs per hour. • Additionally the machine is simple to use and maintain. • Labelling application can be added as a standard module. • The machine is easy to integrate in existing work flows. • The system operates with the Envelope Mailer. The eComPack machine accommodates up to 4 magazines for different Envelope Mailer sizes. Paired with the flexibility to use the Mailer flat or boxy this allows great flexibility with regards to the shape and size of the packed items.

The eComPack machine was launched in September 2022. The latest update includes a label application module.

In a 6 week Factory Acceptance test, the performance of all machine KPIs were confirmed by our co-developing customer´s automation team and feedback was very positive. At the same time the customer´s packaging team was imprssed by the achieved output speed.
