Name of the product or service

A mobile payment solution enabling approx. 165M users in Germany to purchase eCommerce services (games, music, or streaming services etc.) by charging these payments to their mobile phone bill.

Product or service description

Carrier billing is a mobile payment method that customers can use to bill their cell phone provider for purchases. It is used worldwide. In Germany, the mobile phone providers Telekom, Telefónica and Vodafone offer their customers this payment method under the name "Zahl einfach per Handyrechnung”, which literally translates to “Simply pay by mobile phone bill”.

Distinction from the competition

The three mobile phone providers Telefónica, Vodafone and Telekom alone serve around 165,000,000 customers in Germany who could potentially shop with a smartphone using their mobile phone bill. Studies therefore see growth potential in Germany from 2.5 billion US dollars in 2022 to 3.18 billion US dollars in 2026. This makes the payment method the widest-reaching payment method in Germany.

Product or service innovations

Customers of the mobile network operators can use this established payment method to have the purchase of digital products such as games, music or films billed directly to their mobile phone bill, but also parking tickets, tickets for local public transport or ev-charging can also be conveniently paid for in this way. In the digital area, for example, we work together with partners such as Google and Apple in a spirit of trust. Carrier billing has long been an available payment alternative in the respective app stores and is also becoming increasingly popular with other content and service providers in eCommerce and mCommerce.

Customer case study

A national cashback campaign with client nextbike, Europe's bike sharing market leader, promoted Carrier Billing to over 1000 in 9 cities over a 5-month period.

Positive feedback & testimonials

Audi and Vodafone Germany, both main sponsors of OMR (Online Marketing Rockstar) Festival 2022, showed the 70,000 visitors how quick and easy it can be for customers with a mobile phone contract from o2, Vodafone and Telekom to charge and pay at the charging station by carrier billing

In addition, in the "Future Car" Audi e-tron using a showcase specially developed for the OMR22 event, how the future of mobility could look like by taking a possible glimpse into the future of in-car gaming, paid for via the mobile phone bill, "simply pay by mobile phone bill" is already an established payment method in many places.
