AutoStore contributes to sustainability goals by saving both space and energy: The system provides users with up to four times the storage capacity in the same footprint as manual storage. The robots return power to the battery each time it lowers a bin or reduces speed. One robot uses about 100 watts; a team of 10 robots uses the same amount of energy as many household appliances such as a refrigerator or a hair dryer.

Product or service innovations

AutoStore is constantly innovating and anticipating customer needs. It helps companies reimagine their business models, enables growth, and makes automation more easily accessible for businesses to help them generate more revenue.

In January 2021, AutoStore acquired Locai Solutions, a provider of pick-and-pack software to retailers. Following the acquisition, AutoStore launched a complete and automated micro fulfillment center (MFC) solution, integrated with a next generation warehouse management system (WMS), for seamless fulfillment that let’s grocers save time, space, and money - and exceed customer expectations.

AutoStore has also redesigned its signature CarouselPort with new features and benefits for improved order fulfillment in evolving warehouses. CarouselPort is designed to advance workstation productivity and operates in harmony with AutoStore robots to ensure coordination between robot and staff. The new CarouselPort 4.0 enables a lower operating cost by reducing maintenance, service requirements, and has increased labor efficiency through an improved user experience.

Customer case study

When sporting goods retailer XXL ran out of space in 2010, they installed the AutoStore warehouse automation system empowered by Element Logic. After eight expansions, they’ve now become the largest AutoStore facility in Norway.

Fast growth calls for a new system:

“We had issues with space and where to store our goods,” recalls Kai-Remi Berge, XXL’s AutoStore Manager. “But we had new warehouse space, and after doing some research, we decided that we liked the concept of the AutoStore system.”

The company needed a better way to store their goods and a more efficient solution of getting goods to their customers.

“Efficiency has always been important to us,” adds Berge. “Initially, we were unsure if AutoStore was the right system for our products, as it was so new at the time. But we liked the idea.”

The advantages of AutoStore: When XXL first started exploring their automation options, they quickly realized that they needed a system that could grow with the company – a goal they’ve most certainly reached. Since they first installed it, the system has been expanded eight times.

Berge also specifically mentions improved logistics and shortened shipping time for XXL’s many customers, all thanks to the fact that the system is highly efficient and reliable. “We have a guaranteed uptime of over 98% at the facilities,” says Berge, adding that they solve nearly all issues on the same day.

For Berge, another significant advantage has been that it’s easy to learn how to use the system. Within minutes of receiving training, Berger and his team knew how to operate it.

XXL has had the AutoStore system for over a decade now and still doesn’t regret it for a second.
